The $89 covers the technician coming to your home and carrying out a full diagnostic — not a look, a diagnosis. You are then given an upfront quote for the repair itself. If you go ahead with the repair, the $89 is waived and you pay only for parts and labor.
If you decide not to proceed, you pay the $89 and you keep the diagnosis — including what has failed and what it would cost to put right. Plenty of people use that to decide between repairing and replacing, and we would rather give you an honest answer than sell you a repair that is not worth doing.
Because it would be a work of fiction. The same symptom — a refrigerator that will not hold temperature — can be a $200 fan motor or a sealed system rebuild, and no honest technician can tell you which over the phone. What we can do is tell you the likely range once you describe the symptom, and give you a firm number before anything is touched.
Every repair carries a one-year warranty on parts and labor. Major work — sealed system rebuilds, compressor replacement — is covered for up to five years. That difference is deliberate: sealed system work depends more on the technician than on the part, so it is the work we back longest.
