Built-In Refrigerator Repair

The appliance we are called to more than any other, and the one where a wrong diagnosis is most expensive.

A built-in refrigerator is not a freestanding fridge in a nicer cabinet. It is a machine designed to be serviced in place, with the condenser and often the compressor deck at the top, behind a grille, and a sealed system that on the premium brands is split in two — one for the refrigerator, one for the freezer.

That split is the single most useful diagnostic fact in this trade. If your freezer is fine and the refrigerator is warm, the compressor is almost certainly healthy, because the freezer proves one system is running. What is failing is on the refrigerator circuit: its evaporator, its fan, or its defrost. Anyone who quotes you a compressor without opening the grille has not diagnosed anything.

Symptoms

What it usually turns out to be

Find your symptom below and you will know roughly what to expect before we arrive.

Warm refrigerator, cold freezer

Evaporator, evaporator fan, or a defrost fault on the refrigerator circuit. We take a temperature reading at the coil before quoting.

Everything slowly getting warmer

Condenser airflow first — these units pull air through a grille that fills with dust and pet hair — then the condenser fan, then the sealed system.

Frost returning after you clear it

Defrost heater, thermistor or a door seal that has lost its magnetic pull. Clearing frost treats the symptom; the frost tells you which of the three it is.

Water pooling under the unit

A defrost drain iced shut and overflowing the tray, or a split ice-maker line. Cheap to repair, expensive to ignore on wood floors.

Running constantly and never cycling off

Usually a door seal or a defrost fault making the unit fight itself, not a compressor working too hard.

Loud humming or rattling from the top

Condenser fan obstruction or hardened compressor mounts. Easy to fix early, and it is the noise people live with for a year.

Sealed system work — evaporator, condenser, compressor, refrigerant — is covered up to five years, because it is the repair where the technician’s work matters more than the part.

He was at my house in less than 30 minutes. He quickly diagnosed the issue and ordered the part. My machine was up and running in 2 days when I had anticipated a 1-2 week wait. I can’t recommend him enough!

Vlad solved an issue with our fridge that we have had ever since we bought it. No one else had been able to figure it out — zero water pressure from fridge as well as a broken ice machine. Would call him again for any future appliance fixes!

Vlad is a fantastic repair man. I thought I was going to have to buy a new washer unit. He showed up on time the next day and within 1 minute had diagnosed the problem. In and out and the washer is working great again!
