Six symptoms account for most of the calls we take. Each page gives the honest answer first — including the times the answer is “this one you can fix yourself”.
A warm refrigerator with a working freezer almost never means a failed compressor. On a built-in from Sub-Zero, Thermador or Viking the two sections run on separate sealed systems, so a cold freezer proves one system is healthy; on a single-system fridge the freezer would fail first.
Full diagnosis →Nearly every ice maker complaint is a water problem, not an ice problem. If the cubes are hollow, small or half-formed, the machine is not receiving enough water: check the supply valve, the filter and the fill tube before anyone replaces a module.
Full diagnosis →Water on the floor under a refrigerator comes from one of two places, and both are inexpensive repairs made expensive by waiting. The first is the defrost drain: every fridge melts frost off its evaporator on a cycle and routes the water to a tray to evaporate, and when that drain ices closed the water overflows inside the cabinet and runs out under the door.
Full diagnosis →Most ovens that “stopped working” are still working — they are heating to the wrong temperature and doing it faithfully. The temperature sensor drifts with age, the control obeys it, and the result is uneven browning, a preheat that never completes, or a roast that takes an extra half hour.
Full diagnosis →Water left standing in the base at the end of a cycle means the machine could not push it out, and there are only a few places that goes wrong. The filter and sump are blocked, the drain pump has failed or is jammed by something small and hard, the drain hose is kinked or its high loop has collapsed, or — very often on a recently remodelled kitchen — the new waste disposer was fitted without its knockout plug being removed, so the dishwasher has been draining into a sealed pipe since the day it was installed.
Full diagnosis →A dryer that needs two or three cycles is almost never short of heat — it is short of airflow. Drying works by carrying moisture out of the drum, and when the vent run is restricted the machine heats the same air over and over, runs long, gets very hot, and eventually trips its thermal fuse.
