Why is there water left in the bottom of my dishwasher?
Short answer
Water left standing in the base at the end of a cycle means the machine could not push it out, and there are only a few places that goes wrong.
The filter and sump are blocked, the drain pump has failed or is jammed by something small and hard, the drain hose is kinked or its high loop has collapsed, or — very often on a recently remodelled kitchen — the new waste disposer was fitted without its knockout plug being removed, so the dishwasher has been draining into a sealed pipe since the day it was installed. The filter is a genuine homeowner fix. The rest is not, because getting to the pump means pulling a panel-ready machine out of stone worktops.

Listed roughly in the order a technician checks them — which is not the order of how expensive they are, but of how likely.
Most common
Filter and sump blocked
Food debris and grease over months. On premium machines with fine filtration this happens faster than owners expect and it is the first thing to check.

Drain pump failed or jammed
Glass fragments, a fruit stone or a cherry pip will stop a pump dead. Sometimes audible as a hum with no flow.

Disposer knockout plug never removed
Classic after a kitchen remodel. The dishwasher has never drained properly and everyone has blamed the dishwasher.

Drain hose kinked or high loop collapsed
Common after the machine has been pulled out for any reason. Also causes drain water to siphon back in.

Check valve stuck
Water is pumped out and returns. The cycle finishes with the same amount of water it started with.

Control or drain sensor
The machine never commands the drain. Diagnosed after the mechanical path is proven clear.
When to stop and call
If water has reached the floor rather than just standing in the base, switch the machine off at the isolator and call — a leaking dishwasher under stone worktops does damage quickly.
Before you call
What you can safely check yourself
- Turn the machine off at the isolator before putting your hands anywhere near the sump.
- Remove and rinse the filter — on most premium machines it twists out by hand and needs no tools.
- Feel carefully in the sump for glass. If you find any, stop and call rather than clearing it by hand.
- If the kitchen was remodelled recently, ask whether the disposer knockout was removed. It is a two-minute fix that plumbers forget.
- Check the drain hose behind the machine is not crushed against the wall.
Nothing above asks you to open a sealed system, meter a live board or bypass a safety device. If a step needs any of those, it is not on this list.
Will a cleaning product fix it?
A cleaner will not clear a jammed pump or a sealed disposer knockout. It can help a sluggish filter, which you can also just rinse for free.
Why does it smell as well?
Standing water and a loaded filter. Both go away when the drain path is cleared properly.
