Why does my dryer take two or three cycles to dry a load?
Short answer
A dryer that needs two or three cycles is almost never short of heat — it is short of airflow.
Drying works by carrying moisture out of the drum, and when the vent run is restricted the machine heats the same air over and over, runs long, gets very hot, and eventually trips its thermal fuse. That restriction is also the leading cause of dryer fires, which is why this is the one appliance symptom we tell people not to wait on. The lint trap is only the first few feet of the story: the duct behind the machine, the run through the wall and the flap on the outside all block, and in most long-run installations it is the outside end that is worst.

Listed roughly in the order a technician checks them — which is not the order of how expensive they are, but of how likely.
Most common
Vent duct blocked with lint
The whole run, not just the trap. Long runs and flexible foil ducting are worst. This is a fire risk, not just an efficiency one.
Most common
Outside vent flap stuck or screened
Painted shut, blocked by a bird screen, or crushed behind landscaping. Easy to check and easy to miss.
Common
Crushed duct behind the machine
Happens whenever a dryer is pushed back into a tight alcove. Flexible ducting collapses and never recovers.

Blower wheel or housing
A cracked blower wheel moves far less air while sounding roughly normal.

Thermal fuse blown
Usually a symptom of the restriction above rather than a fault in itself — replacing it without clearing the duct just blows another one.
Less common
Heating element or gas valve
A genuinely dead heater gives no heat at all rather than slow drying. Different symptom, different repair.
When to stop and call
A dryer that runs hot with poor flow should be taken out of service until the duct is cleared. This is the one on this site we would rather you rang about today.
Before you call
What you can safely check yourself
- Run the dryer and go outside: you should feel strong warm air at the vent. Weak or cool flow is your answer.
- Pull the lint screen and check the housing beneath it, not just the screen.
- Look behind the machine for a crushed or kinked duct.
- Check the outside flap actually opens when the dryer runs.
- If the machine or the laundry smells hot or scorched, stop using it now and call.
Nothing above asks you to open a sealed system, meter a live board or bypass a safety device. If a step needs any of those, it is not on this list.
How often should the vent be cleared?
Once a year for a normal household, more if the run is long or the family is large. It is maintenance, not repair.
Is a new dryer the answer?
Not if the duct is blocked — the new one will behave exactly the same way within weeks. Clear the run first, then judge the machine.
