Why is there water on the floor under my refrigerator?
Short answer
Water on the floor under a refrigerator comes from one of two places, and both are inexpensive repairs made expensive by waiting.
The first is the defrost drain: every fridge melts frost off its evaporator on a cycle and routes the water to a tray to evaporate, and when that drain ices closed the water overflows inside the cabinet and runs out under the door. The second is the water line to the ice maker or dispenser, which splits at the fitting or the valve. On a built-in installed over hardwood or stone, the flooring damage will exceed the repair within days, so this is the fault least worth living with.

What it usually turns out to be
Listed roughly in the order a technician checks them — which is not the order of how expensive they are, but of how likely.
Most common
Defrost drain iced or blocked
Melt-water cannot reach the evaporation tray, so it backs up, freezes, and eventually runs out of the cabinet. Usually accompanied by ice on the freezer floor.
Most common
Split or loose ice-maker line
The plastic supply line or its compression fitting fails, usually at a bend or behind the unit. This one does not stop on its own.
Common
Cracked or overflowing drain pan
The tray that catches the melt-water has cracked, or is being overfilled because the unit is running a longer defrost than it should.

Door seal letting warm air in
Warm humid air entering the cabinet condenses, and the extra water overwhelms a drain that would otherwise cope.
Less common
Water filter head or valve seeping
A filter housing that has not been seated properly after a change, or an inlet valve weeping past its seat.
When to stop and call
Shut the water off to the unit if you can, and call. On stone or hardwood this is the one appliance fault where a day of waiting can cost more than the appliance.
Before you call
What you can safely check yourself
- Work out whether the water is clean or has been standing — clean water points at the supply line, cloudy at the drain.
- Open the freezer and look at the floor of the compartment. Ice there is the signature of a blocked defrost drain.
- If you can safely reach the shut-off valve for the fridge water line, close it. If the leak stops within an hour, it is the supply, not the drain.
- Check the door seals with the banknote test — a leaking seal makes every other water problem worse.
- Put a towel down and take a photo of where the water actually emerges. It saves diagnostic time and we will ask.
Nothing above asks you to open a sealed system, meter a live board or bypass a safety device. If a step needs any of those, it is not on this list.
Can I just keep mopping it up?
You can, and the drain will keep icing and the line will keep splitting. Neither fault self-corrects, and the floor underneath is absorbing water the whole time.
Is a blocked drain expensive to fix?
It is one of the least expensive repairs we do. Clearing the drain and correcting whatever iced it is usually a single short visit.
