Common problems

Why has my ice maker stopped making ice?

Short answer

Nearly every ice maker complaint is a water problem, not an ice problem.

If the cubes are hollow, small or half-formed, the machine is not receiving enough water: check the supply valve, the filter and the fill tube before anyone replaces a module. If there is no ice at all while the freezer is cold, the fault is on the harvest side — the module, the thermostat or the motor. Those are two different repairs, and swapping the ice maker module for a low-water-pressure problem changes nothing except the invoice.

Diagnosis

What it usually turns out to be

Listed roughly in the order a technician checks them — which is not the order of how expensive they are, but of how likely.

Most common

Water filter overdue

A filter past its life restricts flow enough to starve the fill without stopping the water entirely. Cubes get smaller over weeks. It is also the cheapest thing on this list.

Most common

Fill tube partly frozen

A slow leak at the fill freezes in the tube and progressively narrows it. Thawing it clears the symptom; the leak behind it is the actual repair.

Common

Inlet valve failing

The solenoid valve opens weakly or not at all. Measurable at the valve, and a routine part.

Common

Ice maker module or thermostat

The harvest cycle is not firing. This is the part everyone replaces first and it is genuinely the cause only when water delivery has been ruled out.

Common

Supply line or shut-off valve

A saddle valve slowly closing itself, or a kinked line behind the unit. Common after a fridge has been pulled out for cleaning.

Less common

Bin switch or fill level sensor

The machine believes the bin is full and stops. Easy to confirm and inexpensive.

When to stop and call

If water is appearing under or behind the unit as well as ice failing, treat it as urgent — a split fill line will keep running.

Before you call

What you can safely check yourself

  • Check the date on the water filter. If you cannot remember changing it, that is your answer often enough to try first.
  • Look at the cubes you do have: hollow or undersized means water, none at all means harvest.
  • Make sure the shut-off arm or the bin switch has not been knocked into the off position — a very common one after someone has reorganised the freezer.
  • Check the supply line behind the unit is not kinked, especially if the fridge has been moved recently.
  • On a dispenser model, run water at the door. No water there points at supply rather than at the ice maker.

Nothing above asks you to open a sealed system, meter a live board or bypass a safety device. If a step needs any of those, it is not on this list.

More on this

How long should a new ice maker take to start producing?

Give it 24 hours from a cold start before judging it. Ice makers are slow to come up to rate and a fridge that has just been repaired or moved will lag.

Should I just replace the whole ice maker?

Not until water pressure at the inlet valve has been measured. A module fitted to a starved supply produces exactly the same hollow cubes as the one it replaced.

Our Sub-Zero stopped cooling and I was panicking about losing all our food. Vlad came same day with the parts already in his van. Fixed it in under an hour. This is what real service looks like. Highly recommend!

He was at my house in less than 30 minutes. He quickly diagnosed the issue and ordered the part. My machine was up and running in 2 days when I had anticipated a 1-2 week wait. I can’t recommend him enough!
